The Coprolite is a fossil that first appeared in Animal Crossing: Wild World under the name of "Dino Droppings", then reappeared in Animal Crossing: City Folk as "Coprolite". This is a single-piece fossil and only requires a single section.
If you donate this fossil to the Museum, Blathers will say this:
 Animal Crossing: Wild World
"Hoo my, THIS is impressive! This fossil is in absolutely impeccable shape, wot wot! Dino droppings are a veritable treasure chest of information. For one thing, you can tell what the ancient little beastie ate! This was an herbivore, wot? As such, its... waste... will contain many small rocks... And why? Because this particular beast swallowed rocks with its plants! The rocks ground food up in its belly to ait with digestion... Amazing, wot? Oh! I'm terribly sorry. The very thought of belly pebbles gets me agitated!"
 Animal Crossing: City Folk
"Hoo, absolutely smashing! A fantastic find! These coprolites are treasure troves of information, eh wot? For example, there are little stones mixed in with the droppings of some herbivorous dinosaurs. Indeed, they would swallow plants and stones, which, mashing together in their stomachs, digested food. We can learn not just what they ate, but also HOW they ate! Hootie poo!"

- Coprolite might not be as rare in the game as Blathers seems to think.
 Real Life
In real life Coprolite is simply fossilized animal dung. They give evidence to the behavior of the animal, such as their diet.
Coprolite is rocky in appearance, but does not have any distinguishable traits.
