Real Life

The Firefly is a fairly new bug that was introduced in Animal Crossing: Wild World. The firefly has gone through a lot of changes in appearance from the transition to Animal Crossing: City Folk. It Wild World, the firefly is a bright yellow circle flying around with no depth. In City Folk, the firefly emits a green glow and looks much, much more realistic because of the graphical enhancement on the Wii.

How to Catch

This bug is really easy to catch because of the abundance of them. You will easily be able to spot the firefly because of its colors. Once you do find it, all you need to do is equip your net and swing at the right angle to catch it. The only complication that there may be is if the firefly is in the middle of the river and out of reach. If this is so, just wait for the firefly to fly near the ground and nab it.

Player

This is what you player says when you catch a firefly:

Animal Crossing: Wild World

Animal Crossing: City Folk

"Whoo! I caught a firefly! Now I don't need a flashlight! "

Menu

This is what the menu will say when you catch a firefly:

Animal Crossing: Wild World

Animal Crossing: City Folk

"The posteriors of both females and males light up. They are not turn signals."

Museum

If you donate this bug to the Museum, Blathers will say this:

Animal Crossing: Wild World

"I've heard tales of children unable to buy candles... Yes, these unfortunate souls are said to have studied by firefly light! Ugh. The mere thought of having a bug that close... Blech! So very vile... I'd rather read in darkness!"

Animal Crossing: City Folk

"Many theories exist as to why fireflies can glow, but we've yet to find a clear answer, eh wot? The answer is not nearly so relevant as the fact they are bugs, and therefore wretched."

Trivia

  • The firefly is about 15 millimeters long.
  • Most of the time fireflies will be found flying together.

Real Life

There are more than 2,000 species of fireflies around the world. They use their glowing colors to attract mates and also prey. A chemical reaction called bioluminescence is what makes fireflies emit their glow. The bottom half of their abdomen is the part of their body that glows a lime green color.
