Flowers and hybrids are a popular unique feature in Animal Crossing: City Folk. Same species flowers are to be placed beside eachother in order to get a chance to make a rare flower. This process is simply done, and costs little to no bells to begin.

How to Crossbreed

To make a hybrid, you must place two flowers of the same species beside eachother. Note, the flowers do not have to be the same colour. You must then wait a few days, and a possible hybrid may appear.

Of course, you can place flowers in a different order, and receive a higher chance that the flowers are going to create a hybrid.

Requirements

In order to make a hybrid, you must first purchase atleast 2 packages on the same species of flower. You can have more than that to make a hybrid, and your chances of sucessfully creating a hybrid are increased as well. You must buy either two of the same coloured flower (red+red, white+white, etc..) or two different colours (red+white, yellow+white, etc..). There different combinations of flower colours will make different hybrids appear. It is a good idea to also grow hybrids where there is no items surrounding the flowers, as that drastically decreases the chance of a hybrid to appear. Lastly, flowers can also sprout around possibly areas where hybrids can sprout.

Hybrid List

Tulips:

Red + White = Pink, Red / White
Red + Yellow = Purple, Red / Yellow
Red + Red = Black / Red
Yellow + Yellow = Black / Yellow

Pansies:

Red + Red = Purple / Red
Red + Yellow = Orange, Red / Yellow
White + White = Blue / White

Cosmos:

Red + White = Pink, Red / White
Red + Yellow = Orange, Red / Yellow
Red + Red = Black / Red

Roses:

Red + White = Pink or Red or White
Red + Yellow = Orange or Red or Yellow
White + White = Purple or White
Red + Red = Black or Red
Purple + Black = Blue or Purple or Black
Wilted Black + Golden Can = Gold

Carnations:

Red + Pink = White

Other Flowers

Jacob's Ladder - appears in your town while your town status is perfect
Carnations - in the game, you get them from your Mom and Dad, they cannot be bred.
Dandelion Puffs - appears randomly in your town. Can be blown and a hand-held item.
Dandelions - appears from a Dandelion Puff after awhile. Can be worn.
Rafflesia - appears in museum and in town when many weeds are present. One of the ways to catch a fly. Can not worn or bred. Will only dissapear when the town becomes cleaner.

Pros / Cons

If you are able to grow a hybrid, then you will have actually made around a 500 bells profit. That may not be a lot of money, but these hybrids are considered very rare, and are highly wanted all over the game generally. The difficult part is that sometimes a hybrid will not grow for weeks, which means that the flowers could die actually wasting you about 200-300 bells.
