The Mushroom Series is a very special set that was introduced in Animal Crossing: Wild World and made a return in Animal Crossing: City Folk. Both games have a different way of obtaining this series.

Animal Crossing: Wild World
In this game, you can obtain the Mushroom Series by having a chat with Cornimer on the day of the Acorn Festival. He will tell you that you need to collect acorns on the ground and exchange for a certain number of them, he will trade you an item of the series. No rotten acorns, though!
Animal Crossing: City Folk
This time there is a different way to obtain this set. During the month of November, you may notice that there are mushrooms near trees. Pick these mushrooms. You might get a normal mushroom, or you might get lucky and happen to pluck a piece of the Mushroom Series that was disguised as a mushroom up!
